Fitting out the pond 1998 (photos)
All these photographs, taken in August 1998, are by Anne Richards.

View downwards on to the bridge being built
What is it? A desert irrigation scheme under way, perhaps?

Volunteers stand on the newly-made bridge to test it for strength
No, it's England's 'green and pleasant', believe it or not.

Some of the BTCV volunteers test the bridge they've just made.

Volunteers leaving their handprints in wet concrete
Who needs Hollywood? The volunteers leave their imprint on the bridge foundation.

General view of the newly-excavated pond and wetland, showing the logs that form the revetment
The vertical tree trunks in the centre of the picture will form a revetment, to mark off the viewing area and to provide informal seating.

The word comes from the French, revêtement, meaning the retaining wall for a bank or parapet in fortifications. We don't propose to be that warlike.

A volunteer cuts the installed logs to shape, using a power saw
Chainsaw artist at work, sculpting the revetment.
