A partnership between Barclays PLC and Groundwork, launched in 1996. The scheme aims to help people build stronger communities and improve their environment, transforming derelict and under-used land for recreational and community use. The scheme is managed by Groundwork, with support from British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and the Wildlife Trusts.

This is the only British organisation devoted solely to conserving bats and their habitats. It campaigns in Britain and abroad, and carries out scientific research. The Trust has a network of volunteers, including over 90 local groups, and provides training for them. It runs the national Bat Helpline (see below), which helps and advises people who find bats in their property. Alison Rasey, of the Trust's central office, was one of the speakers at our Friends' evening in March 2003.

Set up in 1991, this was the first Community Wildlife Area in Tandridge. It covers 25 acres (10 hectares) and includes a restored pond, around 10,000 native trees and paths for the disabled.

A small educational zoo specializing in British mammals. It houses over fifty species in naturalistic settings, from small mice to large deer, including foxes, wildcats, badgers and otters.
The Centre has been imaginatively designed and is sensitively run by David Mills, who gives conducted tours. David kindly gave a presentation on the Centre at our Friends' evening in March 1999.

BT Countryside for All has produced standards and guidelines on access to the countryside that take disabled people's needs into account. It supports access projects through grants. Theirs is one of the best Web sites for specific information on managing access for all to the countryside.

Britain's main butterfly and moth conservation organization. It has more than 30 branches, covering the whole of the country, and carries out conservation tasks, provides advice and guidance and runs national species recording schemes. It owns and manages nearly twenty reserves.

Chris is an ethnobotanist, writer, publisher and illustrator. An ethnobotanist researches man's association with plants, including their functional, medicinal and spiritual uses. Chris publishes the results of his researches in a series of books, which he stylishly illustrates. He also gives entertaining and informative talks on the subject. He gave one, entitled Surrey Trees: Fact and Folklore, at our Friends' evening in March 2000.
