The Ponds Conservation Trust is a consortium of 23 environmental, archaeological and community organizations that was set up in May 1998. It publishes The Pond Book, which we found invaluable and thoroughly recommend. It is in the process of being made available online, here. (Most other readily available books are wholly or mainly about garden ponds and do not deal with the issues raised with larger ponds, such as on reserves, parks and farms.)

They were all bought by the City of London Corporation in 1883 and are protected against development by an Act of Parliament of 1878. This was a national scheme, funded jointly by English Nature, the Countryside Commission and the Rural Development Commission. Its aim was to provide help for local groups who needed advice or grants for community projects. In Surrey, the scheme was administered by the Surrey Voluntary Service Council, in a partnership with BTCV, Surrey Wildlife Trust and Surrey County Council.
In April 1999, the Countryside Commission and the Rural Development Commission merged, to create the Countryside Agency, resulting in the dissolution of these national and local arrangements. There seems to have been nothing similar created to carry on their useful work.
