A worldwide organization of clubs for women in business and the professions, dedicated to promoting human rights and the status of women. It was established in the USA in 1921 and has around 97,000 members in 122 countries and territories.

An organization for people involved practically in nature conservation in southern Britain. It is a network of 'doers' and exists to encourage the exchange of knowledge and ideas among its members. SWAN is run by its members for its members, and is not reliant on other organizations for funding, support or approval.

This changed its name in 2001 to the The National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy, which although more descriptive is less resonant locally. As its Web site says: "The accent is on development - personal, social and educational - with the support of a team of experts who work together to give every student the opportunity to reach his or her full potential".

This was a joint programme by Surrey County Council and the then the Countryside Commission (now Countryside Agency). Its aim was a reduction in the damaging affects of car use in country areas. Actions included introducing lower speed limits and traffic gateways, junction improvements and creating nearly 90 miles of cycleway. In Lingfield, STAR funded a bus for schoolchildren as well as the hard surfacing of paths on the Wildlife Area. The scheme has finished now.
A group of expert enthusiasts who advise on habitat and conservation matters concerning toads, frogs, newts, snakes and lizards.

This is the primary botanical recording organization for Surrey (vice-county 17). It provides a county recorder to the Botanical Society of the British Isles and is consulted by other conservation organizations, such as the Surrey Wildlife Trust.

As well as being, per head of population, the richest county in Britain, Surrey is the most densely wooded. About a fifth of its area is covered by woodland. There are three national nature reserves in it, including Chobham Common. This, like all the County Council's reserves, has been managed since 2002 by Surrey Wildlife Trust.

The national Tree Warden scheme is sponsored by National Grid and promoted and coordinated by The Tree Council. It is a national initiative to enable people to play an active role in conserving and improving their local trees and woods. Tree Wardens are volunteers who gather information about their local trees, give advice on tree matters, protect threatened trees and encourage local practical tree projects.

This is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts in Britain. It owns or manages 25 nature reserves across the county, including an educational field centre at its Nower Wood reserve. SWT monitors hundreds of planning applications every year for their impact on nature conservation. It also runs the Surrey branch of the national Wildlife Watch! organization for young people interested in nature conservation.
