Special Work Party and National Tree Week event
Sunday, 29 November 2009.

Despite the gloomy weather forecast for a very wet day on Sunday, a welcome lull and a bright morning encouraged 45 adult volunteers and 16 children from local youth groups including Dormansland Baptist Church youth club to visit the Nature Reserves with their tools and much enthusiasm.

The work party was held as part of National Tree Week and the priority was to trim the long hedges between fields and around the pond area, whilst leaving the berries and fruit as food for the wildlife. Winter pruning also commenced in the Community Orchard.

The Guides donated and planted a Scarlet Oak, members of the Lingfield Cubs, Guides and Explorers helped to plant 4 Wild Service trees, a Hazel and a Strawberry tree. Local residents planted 2 Holm Oaks and a Silver Birch which they had donated. The young visitors cleared around the base of younger trees in a new copse, so the rain could reach the roots, and were also kept very busy clearing
all the trimmings resulting from the hedge cutting.

A full schedule of planned works was completed and volunteers were treated to a rainbow across the sky towards the North Downs as they started to pack up just as the rain began to come down again !
